Environment design and textures for games

Some examples of the work I have completed at Tafe this year as part of the Diploma of Screen and Media.
These were both projects for my texturing class. First is a Adelaide style Federation cottage which would have been built around 1900.
Below are the orthographics I created as studies of the style, period and architecture. The final textured model is just of the front of the building, as would be seen from the street in a game.

Below is an interior design for an underwater Art Deco engine room/hall. The first image is a concept painted over a very basic roughed out model created in Maya, followed by the final textured environment. All the textures and components are modular, allowing for quick alterations of the scene and for use in other rooms and environments.

Animal drawings and social media links

Below are some digital animal paintings I have completed recently.

I have finally made a Tumblr and have started uploading my images and sketches there - the address is carriesprod.tumblr.com. I also now have a Society6 account which has prints and connections to some pretty insanely good artists. If you have not already and wish to stay more up to date with what I am doing I recommend liking my Facebook page, as it is updated a bit more frequently than my blog.

Game Art Tafe work overview

This year I have predominantly been spending my time studying Game Art at Tafe, developing some practical skills to compliment the theory grounding that I got from studying at UniSA.

I thought it about time I shared some of the exercises I have completed as part of my studies.

Below are some very basic fighter robot concepts completed in first semester. The brief was to create a black and white sketch of a gladiator style robot designed purely to fight other robots - firearms not allowed. I developed two concepts instead of the single one to show what opponents might look like in fights.

Below is my most recent work, some hand painted tile-able textures of different materials intended for an isometric style game environment. I completed both the metal and wood panel textures yesterday with variations for edges and joints. I have been thoroughly enjoying the texturing work at Tafe and am looking for opportunities to take it further

Below are some photo studies I completed outside of my Tafe work when I have free class time. Because I am mostly comfortable on paper I am pushing my digital painting skills whenever I can, and completing the expected course work quickly allows me to fit in some valuable practice.

Finally, here are some basic renders of the final modelling test from semester 1, where we were shown a object (in this case a nerf gun) and told to model, UV and texture it in class. Before commencing my study at Tafe I had never used a 3D modelling program before, so getting my head around Autodesk Maya and the 3D terminology has been a real challenge. Unfortunately I had some program and computer glitches during this final test so the gun is not quite to the level I had hoped, but given my past experience I am relatively happy with how it turned out. The gun and all its components (including the spare ammo) were done in just under 3000 tris.

Photo studies

Experimenting with new Photoshop brushes I made by doing studies of film stills and a photo. Attempting to gain a more natural media painterly look.

Character concept 2

So I heard yesterday that a new version of Mad Max is in production. I love the first and am not sure if this is good or bad news for it, but it certainly is fun to mess with how some of the visuals could differ from the first.

Mech Design 1

Loving the Adelaide CDW I am currently attending. Today Khang Le did a mech design demo, so I tried coming up with my own design at the same time (see above). I never realized mech design could be so fun!

Landscape WIP

Work in progress.

This is the start of an image for one of the briefs set by Simon Scales in his introductory digital painting class done through CDW Studios. The theme is fantasy Europe, with a castle and waterfalls being part of the brief.

This is a sketch I am currently working on for fun around my other work - really enjoying the opportunity to play with colour and experiment a bit

Colour environments

Here is some more recent work from the CDW Studios class I am taking with Simon Scales.
Starting to play with colour more in the thumbnail stage of the design process.

Intro to Digital Environment Painting

Last night marked the start of the Simon Scales course on digital painting run through his new school.
It was great to go back to basics and be limited to a single hard round Photoshop brush for use in grey-scale thumbnail studies - shockingly this made the blocking in process a lot easier and faster. I am looking forward to developing some more environment studies and creating more thumbnails to a brief in the coming weeks, but for now I will simply post the thumbnails I did last night during the demonstration.
